I can’t remember how or where I learned about Maya Hawke’s musical pursuits, but I’m glad I did. It turns out that for a few years now the Stranger Things actress has been releasing some really special stuff.

There are more than a few reasons for you to know who Maya Hawke is. The spitting image daughter of Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke plays a central role as Robin in Stranger Things. As well as this she’s had roles in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood by Quentin Tarantino, Little Women alongside Saoirse Ronan, and more.

A set of achievements such as this would have most people pin Hawke down as an actress full-stop, but this is a deeply creative individual, and the screen is not a big enough canvas. In refusal to tick just one creative box, Maya Hawke has somehow been releasing self-written music with the regularity of a full-time musician.

Her first musical offering was in the form of two tracks released in 2019. To Love a Boy is a love story inspired by Call Me By Your Name, released alongside Stay Open, A minimalistic acoustic track with a light-hearted take on love.

Hawke’s music isn’t complicated. It’s delicate, minimal, and acoustic with an ever-so-slight Americana influence. The actress/singer-songwriter hybrid writes as delicately as she sounds, not getting too deep or abstract all the time, but not needing to.

Following To Love A Boy a year later Hawke released her debut full-length Blush. Released following her first appearance in Stranger Things, the record is a charming and soulful exploration of love, told through the feathery light voice of Hawke.

Last month Hawke released Thérèse, a plucky, delicate single alongside the announcement of new album MOSS, set to be released on September 23rd. She appeared on Jimmy Fallon to discuss her work on Stranger Things and the new album, showing its first physical pressing.
